❂ JUDGING A RESEARCH STUDY❂

Journal Tittle: THE EFFECT OF CUSTOMERS’ SATISFACTION TOWARDS CUSTOMER LOYALTY AMONG MOBILE TELECOMUNICATION PROVIDERS IN MALAYSIA
Researcher Name: Sarina Ismail

Judging a research study of:

  1. The topic is to broad-The topic chosen is to broad. Researcher should narrow down the topic to be more specific. For example, Mobile Telecommunication providers in Malaysia. Who is the target market. If she chose Malaysia to be specific, the sample should whole Malaysia users (14 countries). If the researcher only focus on several countries, there is a bias on the result.
  2. The objective-The researcher should have a main objective and specific objective where the objective should be linked with the problem statement, research question and hypotheses.
  3. Theoretical Framework- The researcher didn't explained the theoretical framework. The researcher supposed to explained what is the theoretical that they use in completed the study.

❂ Advantages & Challenges of Ethnographic Study ❂

Ethnographic research is one of the most in-depth research method. An ethnographer sees what people are doing as well as what they say they are doing. It provides researchers which rich insights into human, social and cultural aspect. The main purpose of ethnography is obtain in a deep understanding of people culture. Ethnography is one of the method in entirely in fieldwork.

“Ethnographic accounts are both descriptive and interpretive:  descriptive because detail is critical and interpretive because the ethnographer must determine the significance of observations without gathering broad, statistical information.”  Clifford Geertz coined the term “thick description” to convey the methodology of the ethnographer.

To conduct their research, ethnographers, also called fieldworkers, often live among the people they are studying, or at least spend a considerable amount of time with them.  While in the field, ethnographers engage in “participant-observation” which means that they participate as much as possible in local daily life, while also making careful observations.  An ethnographer might partake in important ceremonies and rituals of a culture or might share in ordinary activities such as meal preparation and consumption.  This technique is intended to provide an “emic” perspective or native’s point of view, without imposing the observer’s conceptual framework.  The emic viewpoint, which may differ from the “etic” or outsider’s perspective on daily life, is a unique and critical component of ethnographic research.  In addition, ethnographers use a technique known as triangulation to identify multiple data sources, such as fieldnotes, interviews, and site documents, which work together to support their research claims.

There are several advantages of Ethnographic in market research as:
  • One of the most valuable aspects is the depth of understanding
  • Can challenge ‘taken for granted’ assumption.
  • Ethnographic can account for the complexity of group behaviors, reveal interrelationships among multifaceted dimensions of group interactions, and provide context for behaviors.
  • Ethnographic can reveal qualities of group experience in a way that other research methods cannot.
Besides that, there are some challengers when we use ethnographic in our field work. Because it is take a long time, it some challengers in data collection. The challengers as:
  • It can be difficult to write up the findings for a journal article- it is because ethnographers utilize the participant-observation method, recording field notes, conducting interviews, and collecting additional data to supplement their research.
  • By using ethnographic, it is needed to emphasizes a 'thick description' and critique
  • Time commitment – significant length of time required in the field (months/years)
  • Orientation of researcher – learns from people of the observation

❂FACT & THEORY❂

What does FACT means?

When we talk about fact, it's can be defined in a several ways. Fact can be classified for something that actually exists or something that have happened. The truth of fact can be known by actual experience or observation in science context. In my perception on "fact" term, the information that we have should include with evidence to produce a valid information and make sure that a piece of information is true.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

What does THEORY means?

Theory is a something that we belief even there is no proof. The idea of theory attempt to explain how and why something happen. In a simple words, we can conclude that theory is something that we don't know it exactly and we do more than a first attempt which is called a "hypothesis" to measured the data collected is the data well accepted or not. The hypothesis is often used as a fancy synonym to "guess". But in science context, theory is a conceptual framework that explains existing observations and predicts new one. Once the theory is done, we can identified whether the explanation or observation is a theory or fact. But, we can't separates the facts from theories because it is to present everything as truth.

❂ INDUCTIVE OR DEDUCTIVE ? ❂

In doing my research, I can conclude that my research is categorized on inductive research approach. What is inductive research approach?Inductive research approach can be describe as a moving from the specific to the general or theories. Besides that, inductive approach can classified as a qualitative analysis approaches where the model or theory should be structured in the text (raw data). Then, it should be linked between the research objective and the summary findings from the raw data.

The trustworthiness of findings can be assessed by a range of techniques such as :
(a) independent replication of the research,
(b) comparison with findings from previous research,
(c) triangulation within a project,
(d) feedback from participants in the research,
(e) feedback from users of the research findings.

❂ MY RESEARCH TOPIC ? ❂

Assalammualaikum..

ye there !

This blog is created for my Research Methodology subject. For my Final Year Project (FYP), I decided to do a research regarding : Influences on customer loyalty towards fashion among young consumers.

I have choose this topic because I am a "shophoholic" person where I love to go shopping even there is no "sale" and it's not for me. As a student, I'm interested to do a research regarding young generation like me as well on buying process. I want to study what the factors can influence young consumers on buying process but I need to narrow it to be more specific. So, I decided to study the factors can influence young customer on buying clothes, shoes, in a simple words is buying process in "fashion" context. Is a customer loyalty is one of the factors? There is my problem when we talk about loyalty. What is the factors can make young customer be loyal to a product?Accordingly, I need to categorized my research according several dimension.

Objective: The study is to examine what factors influence the customer loyalty and young consumer’s perception of fashions needs.

Purpose: This study seeks to examine customer loyalty in the fashion context and young consumer perceptions of marketing strategy (product, price, place, and promotion), customer value (quality, sacrifice) branded clothing and relationship quality on customer loyalty with a view to identifying potential barriers to adoption. ( A descriptive study)

Research Question: What is the factors that can influence young customer to be loyal to a product?

Variables: marketing strategy, customer value and relationship quality.

Survey Respondents: UNIMAS students, young customer (Y generation)

Type of Investigation: Causal study (cause and effect relationship). I would like to manipulate some variables that effect with the problem.

❂ WHAT IS RESEARCH ❂

What is research?

There are many definition regarding what research is..from my side, research is a finding solution process after we face with a problem. Research can be systematic if we manage how to gather and compile the information properly. In other word, research is a problem solving where we will ask and answer the question occur. There are lots of method can help to solve the problem which is quantitative research and qualitative research.

In doing a research, we must identify the problem of course, and issue what was happened. So, we need to make a deep review regarding the problem/question. Besides, we can get the data/information from primary, secondary or tertiary sources.
